$1 million new funding for research co-operation with Germany PDF Print E-mail

The Group of Eight universities and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) today announced an extra AUD 1 million to support research collaboration between Australia and Germany.

The funding will be granted under the second round of applications for the Go8 Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme.

The result of an agreement between the Go8 and the DAAD, the world’s largest scholarship granting institution, the scheme targets early career researchers and supports collaborative research projects over a wide range of disciplines.

The funding announced today will allow 27 teams of researchers from Australia and Germany to visit each other in 2009 and 2010 to work on solutions to complex problems facing both our countries including energy production, climate change and labour market outcomes of immigrants.

In announcing the results today, Professor Doug McEachern, Chair of the Go8 DVCs Research, said the Go8 is delighted to be part of the scheme. “We recognise Germany’s outstanding record in research and innovation and we hope that together we will be able to generate economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits for both our nations.”

German Ambassador to Australia, Dr Michael Witter, said the Go8 - DAAD scheme plays an important role in supporting the internationalisation of science, research and development.

The DAAD’s spokesperson in Australia, Dr Andreas Jaeger, said there has long been interest from Australian and German researchers in working together but until now there has been no funding mechanism for such co-operation in Australia. “The Go8 scheme is filling an important funding gap for research collaboration with Germany,” said Dr Jaeger.

A summary of projects funded in 2009/2010 is attached. The results of the first funding round are also available from the Go8 website.

The Go8’s five minute DVD presentation about the scheme is available to download from the Go8 website: www.go8.edu.au
